Nothing nourishes your body like real food

This pisses me off.

REALLY?! Because this bottled, processed drink is a better choice than EGGS?!?! The protein in eggs is some of the highest quality protein available in any food. 

What are the ingredients in eggs? 
Eggs. 

What are the ingredients in this Ensure drink? 
Water, Milk Protein Concentrate, Corn Maltodextrin. Less than 2% of the Following: Calcium Caseinate, Soy Protein Isolate, Sugar (Sucrose), Short-Chain Fructooligosaccharides, High Oleic Safflower Oil, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Magnesium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Ascorbate, Sodium Chloride, Carrageenan, Cellulose Gel, Gellan Gum, Acesulfame Potassium, Sucralose, Zinc Gluconate, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Niacinamide, Manganese Gluconate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Chromium Chloride, Folic Acid, Beta-Carotene, Vitamin D3, Biotin, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenite, Potassium Iodide, Phytonadione, and Cyanocobalamin.

Most people don't even know what most of those ingredients and yet we trust them and eat them. Why?? These products are designed for just one purpose...to make money. If the companies making these products really cared about your body and health, they would not be using added flavorings (chemicals), GMO additives (soy and corn), or thickeners and stabilizers often used in household cleaning products. 

 

This pisses me off too.

Why? Because this is a poor excuse for a protein supplement designed to help build muscle. Or is it? Maybe the majority of people interested in muscle gain do not care so much for HOW the muscle is gained. Which is a whole different topic...I digress. It's right there in the label: "artificially flavored." And yet it sells like hotcakes. Why are so many people OK with artificial ingredients in their body? Artificial: not natural or real; made, produced, or done to seem like something natural (Merriam-Webster). Yummy! Maltodextrin is the first ingredient, which means it is the most prevalent. Notice a trend here? Maltodextrin was a top ingredient in the Ensure drink as well. And how many people know what maltodextrin is? Do you? Yet again, we trust the product to deliver an "excellent supplement designed for proper recovery." You know what would do an even better job? REAL food. Throw together some steamed rice, diced potato, and juicy chicken breast seasoned with coconut aminos and grilled to perfection and your body will gladly receive all the quick-absorbing carbs and repairing protein it needs from real food sources. NOTHING beats real food.

With all that being said, the more experience I have working with clients of differing lifestyles...the more I come to realize that ****gulp**** supplements may actually be necessary to some. And these "some" are few and far between. Does being a CrossFitter automatically mean you need protein supplements? Absolutely not. If you weight lift once a week, do you need protein supplements? Of course not. The people whom I believe might actually need food products like this are extreme athletes: Long distance runners, swimmers, and cyclists. Bodybuilders. Weightlifters. Folks with deficiencies or absorption issues. Athletes training for major sporting events or competitions; the super serious ones where their sport is not just a part of their life, it IS their life. But is that who these products are marketed towards? Hell no. They want the average gym rat to think he/she needs to be guzzling this crap pre and post workout and maybe even as a meal replacement at another point during the day.

 

There is a fine line between athleticism and nutrition though it seems to be looked at the opposite way by so many. I remember early on in my journey when I used to DREAM about being able to stuff my face with pizza and gulp down my favorite sodas (Dr. Pepper and anything orange flavored). I literally used to think about this almost everyday. "Someday," I thought, "I'll be so fit and lean that I can eat whatever the hell I want to and not give a shit about it." Well, that day has come. I am living the life of my dreams in the body of my dreams and guess what? I DO eat whatever I want whenever I want. But I don't want pizza or soda. I don't want burritos and beer. I don't want fried chicken and biscuits. I want REAL food. Food that makes me feel good and look good. I don't like it when my skin gets oily or dry. I don't like it when my hair is brittle. I don't like it when I'm bloated. I hate feeling lethargic. I can't stand it when I have difficulty focusing. I hate starting over. And I don't like feeling bad mentally, physically...period! I work too hard to throw it all away for 10 seconds of "bliss." That is why I don't eat processed foods. I am not an extreme athlete. I do CrossFit 5 days a week and bike up to 15 miles per day. I'm on my feet a lot working with my own clients, I assist my partner on her shoots, and I love to hike on the weekends as well so it's fair to say I live an active life. But I don't need supplements and "carb-loading days" aka an excuse to eat like shit. You probably don't either but don't take my word for it. Give it up for a month, stick to real food, and let us know how you look and feel afterwards.
